AI & Editorial Use

AI can assist editorial work. It does not become the authority for what SPURN publishes.

Where AI may assist

SPURN may use AI-assisted tools to help organise research, compare material, summarise working documents, develop drafts, test structure, or support technical production. The extent of assistance can vary by task.

What AI is not

AI output is not treated as independent evidence. A model response does not become a source simply because it is fluent or plausible. Claims that matter to publication should be checked against inspectable source material, and uncertainty should remain visible where the evidence is incomplete.

Human editorial responsibility

Published editorial content is subject to human review and editorial control. SPURN remains responsible for selection, framing, verification, interpretation and the decision to publish. We do not use AI as a justification for fabricated quotations, invented sources or unsupported factual claims.

Synthetic and manipulated media

When synthetic or materially manipulated audio, imagery or video could reasonably be mistaken for documentary material, SPURN will label it in a way that makes its status clear. AI-generated material should not be presented as documentary evidence of an event that did not occur.

Disclosure

Routine editorial assistance does not automatically require a label on every sentence. Where AI generation or manipulation is material to how a reader should understand a published work, SPURN will disclose that use. We also monitor applicable transparency requirements as they develop.

Corrections still apply

AI-assisted work is subject to the same corrections standard as any other SPURN publication. If an AI-assisted process contributes to an error, the error is still ours to correct.
